Submarine Technology

Introduction

Since the end of the cold war, the mission profiles of submarines have expanded to a large spectrum, ranging from strategic deterrence to intelligence gathering and special operations in littoral environments. While the trend for downsized fleets and declining budgets continues, the development of innovative technology for silent and air-independent operations provides navies with unprecedented capabilities.

Emerging markets in countries that strive for increasing control of their territorial waters, in particular in South America and Asia, open up new opportunities for international shipbuilders. Despite the predominance of a few internationally operating manufacturers, technology transfer agreements and growing industrial capabilities in developing nations led to an increasing number of indigenous projects in the submarine sector during recent years.

defpro.com seeks to shed light on this special market with this editorial focus, including interviews with leading companies and topical news form the submarine sector.
